Plans to open the curtains to performances on Broadway later this month have been pushed back until June 7.

The 41 Broadway houses in New York City will remain closed as the city combats the coronavirus pandemic ravaging Manhattan. The Broadway League, a trade association representing producers and theater owners, made the announcement.

“Our top priority continues to be the health and well-being of Broadway theater-goers and the thousands of people who work in the theater industry every day, including actors, musicians, stagehands, ushers, and many other dedicated professionals,” said Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League. “Broadway will always be at the very heart of the Big Apple, and we join with artists, theater professionals, and fans in looking forward to the time when we can once again experience live theater together.”

Industry leaders told The New York Times they expect the closure to last longer than June. Some say the July 4 weekend or after Labor Day would be more realistic.

Broadway theaters closed on March 12 and the entire industry has been on hold. Last season, the industry attracted 14.8 million patrons and grossed $1.8 billion.

The Broadway League said ticket holders will receive an email with information about refunds or exchanges. If patrons do not receive an email by April 12, they should reach out to their point of purchase for information.
