Despite extensive nationwide protests, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham did what was expected and extended the state's stay-at-home policy until May 15.

She said that reopening the state will happen in a "gradual and safe" manner and announced on Twitter, "We're not ready to ease up."

She stressed during a press conference, "We will not be able to reopen everything on May 16. The virus will not be gone. The pandemic will not be over. There is no magical date."

New Mexico's stay-at-home order was originally announced on March 23. On Wednesday, Grisham said, "It's too early to stand outside and say, 'We won.' It is an  invisible threat and it is still there."

As of Friday morning, New Mexico had 2,379 confirmed coronavirus cases and 78 deaths.

On Monday, a caravan of cars protested at the state capitol in Santa Fe, with demonstrators waving flags, honking horns, and exhibiting signs demanding an end to the order.

However, Grisham stated, "I want to be crystal clear: While we're making progress, we are not yet out of the woods.

"No one wants to be locked down — everyone wants to hug their loved ones. We all want businesses to be able to open. But simply wanting this to be over will not get us there."

She praised residents on Twitter, saying, "If you are staying home, your actions have saved countless — truly countless — lives, & will save many more."
