A majority of Americans support President Joe Biden's massive social spending package when it's presented as a way to help families and improve medical coverage, according to a new Navigator poll.
Overall, 62% of respondents said they backed the $3.5 trillion legislation, which the poll described as a way to provide family and medical leave, fund universal pre-Kindergarten, expand Medicare coverage, and lower the cost of drug prices, The Hill reported Friday.
The Navigator survey, conducted by pollsters with long-time ties to Democrat candidates, also found that many people remain unfamiliar with the details of the plan. Only 22% of respondents said they were hearing "a lot" about the plan, including just 13% of independents.
People who said they supported Biden's "Build Back Better" agenda included 91% of Democrats, 52% of independent voters, and 32% of Republicans, the survey found.
The Navigator poll also found support among 90% of Democrats and 49% of independents when it's explained that Biden's economic plan would be paid for by increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans and cracking down on tax evasion. There's no mention of taxes that might affect average citizens.
The left-leaning survey's results reflect White House officials' concerns about needing to clearly explain a massive spending package that, they say, is widely popular with voters.
Biden will visit Connecticut on Friday specifically to focus on the child-care benefits in the package.
Opposition to the spending bill by moderate Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., has prevented the social spending legislation from being passed in the Senate via reconciliation and in the House, where the bill certainly would succeed along party lines if voted on.
Negotiations continue on the spending bill with all sides conceding that the final price tag will not be the proposed $3.5 trillion.
Manchin, in an agreement during the summer with Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., proposed a $1.5 trillion limit on the package.
A bipartisan infrastructure bill has stalled in the House where progressives refuse to vote on it before being presented a spending bill.

The poll was conducted Oct. 7-11 among 1,011 registered voters.
