The National Guard informed staffers on Capitol Hill six years ago of bonuses mistakenly paid out to troops, The Hill reported.

The emails were sent to staffers of both the House and Senate Armed Services committees in October of 2010. However, it's unclear if those communications were forwarded to lawmakers, according to The Hill.

An audit revealed Master Sgt. Toni Jaffe fraudulently paid out reenlistment bonuses to nearly 10,000 soldiers in the California National Guard not qualified to receive them in an effort to hit enlistment goals.

Jaffe plead guilty and was sentenced to 30 months in prison, but the Pentagon then went on an effort to recoup about $20 million in 2012, The Hill reported.

That effort ended on Oct. 26, two days after an LA Times report surfaced the Pentagon's effort to claw back the bonuses. Lawmakers on both sides and President Obama expressed outrage and urged the Pentagon to cease and desist, which it did.
