Report: Romneys Might Sell Oceanfront 'Car Elevator' Home

Mitt Romney's home in La Jolla, California — the one with a car elevator in the garage — might soon be on the market.

According to The Boston Globe, Romney is thinking about selling the oceanfront property. It has been under construction ever since he and his wife Ann decided to tear down the 3,000-square-foot home that was there before. Leaving nothing but the swimming pool and spa, the new home, which comes in at 11,000 square feet, has been under construction since before the 2012 presidential election.

But aides told the Globe the Romneys might sell it. There was no word on an asking price.

The home contains a car elevator in the garage that drops down to a basement, leaving room for more cars on the ground level. Plans for the home, according to the Globe, also call for a library and an open floor plan on the first level. The basement will reportedly have an exercise room, a recreation room, and a storage room for beach gear.

Construction is due to be completed by the end of this year, at which point the Romneys might put it on the market. The home is one of four the Romneys own.

"Mitt and Ann’s plans are firm," Matthew Peterson, the Romneys' San Diego-based attorney, told the Globe. "They will be completing the construction of the home by the end of the year, but no decision has been made at this time whether to keep it or sell it."

Peterson added that the home has already been shown to potential buyers, but the Romneys are waiting until construction is finished before deciding whether to put it up for sale.

The Romneys also have homes in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, and a vacation home in Wolfeboro, N.H. All are located close to where their five married sons and 23 grandchildren live.

The Romneys sold a condo in Boston suburb Belmont last year.

Mitt Romney did not earn the Republican nomination in the 2008 presidential election, while in 2012 he lost to President Barack Obama in the general election. He had no plans to run again in 2016, but recent signs suggest he is considering giving it another go.
