A Mississippi school named after Confederate President Jefferson Davis will be renamed in honor of former President Barack Obama, The Clarion-Ledger is reporting.

Davis Magnet IB PTA President Janelle Jefferson announced the name change on Tuesday at a meeting of the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees. The school's enrollment is 98 percent black, the newspaper said.

"Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him," she said.

And she noted the school community wanted a name "to reflect a person who fully represents ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves."

And The Hill pointed out the name change comes as debate continues over removing Confederate statutes in a number of cities.
