Twenty-one percent of Republican voters prefer Vice President Mike Pence over Donald Trump as president, according to a new Hill-HarrisX poll released Wednesday.
Still, 79% of the same group would rather have Trump as the U.S. commander.
The poll comes as several committees have started impeachment proceedings against the president following the release of a whistleblower complaint alleging Trump pressured Ukraine's leader to investigate Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, for political gain ahead of the 2020 presidential election.
The White House has indicated it will not cooperate with the proceedings. Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, a central figure in the probe, has said the same.
The poll also found 79% of Democrats said they would prefer Pence as president, compared with 21% who picked Trump.
Independents were split – 47% chose Pence and 53% chose Trump.
Voter support for impeachment and removing Trump from office is growing, with 50% of registered voters saying they would back both moves, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Tuesday.
