Mike Huckabee delivered a backhanded compliment to CNN on Monday for its retraction of a story linking President Donald Trump to a Russian investment fund.
"Give credit where it's due: CNN just took a baby step toward rebuilding its reputation as a journalism outlet rather than a Democratic propaganda organ," Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and two time GOP presidential candidate, wrote on his Facebook page.
"[It did that by] completely retracting a 'bombshell' story about an alleged Senate investigation of an alleged meeting between a Trump transition team member and a Russian investment fund.
"Of course, they'd already set off the bombshell. But at least, they're trying to sweep up the wreckage they caused, so that's progress, I guess."
The Washington Examiner reported Sunday that CNN is changing its reporting procedures on the federal probe into Russia's tampering in the 2016 presidential election following an online story published Thursday and then retracted and deleted the next day.
And in an email obtained by BuzzFeed, CNNMoney executive Rich Barbieri wrote to employees, "No one should publish any content involving Russia without coming to me and Jason," referring to a CNN vice president.
The story that prompted the action involved a claim that Anthony Scaramucci, a member of President Donald Trump's transition team and founder of global investment firm SkyBridge Capital, met with the chief executive of a $10 billion Russian investment firm days before the president took office.
The article, which cited one unnamed source, also claimed the Senate Intelligence Committee was looking into the matter.
