Obama Speaks to Miami Community College Grads

Taking the opportunity to show his support for immigration reform and push his administration's emphasis on community colleges, President Barack Obama addressed graduates of Miami Dade College Friday night, The Miami Herald reports.

The crowd cheered the president with shouts of  "Yes, we can!"  and the president left with his own diploma, accepting his first honorary associate’s degree from MDC President Eduardo Padron.

Padron also presented Obama with the school’s Presidential Medallion before some 5,000 students.

The president’s appearance was part of Obama's emphasis on the importance of community colleges.

The diversity of Miami Dade’s student body, with 66 countries represented in this year’s 14,000-student graduating class, also provided the president an incentive to talk about immigration policy.

“It makes no sense to expel talented young people from our country,” Obama said. “If they are trying to serve in our military or earn a degree, they are contributing to our future, and we welcome those contributions.”
