MIAMI (AP) — The FBI says authorities have arrested a man who was carrying bullet parts that exploded in his bag at Miami International Airport.
Police had initially thought it was an aerosol can, but FBI spokesman Mike Leverock says it was bullet primers that ignited in the checked bag as it was being unloaded from a flight. Not all of the several hundred primers inside the bag ignited, and no one was hurt.
Leverock says there is no connection to terrorism. The man is a naturalized U.S. citizen who was traveling Tuesday on an American Airlines flight from Boston to Miami that was continuing to Jamaica. His name was not released.
The man has been charged with transportation of hazardous materials, which carries a potential five-year prison sentence if he is convicted.
