House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy Tuesday said he would advise people in his home state of California to wear masks as its coronavirus numbers rise, as he does not want to see the economy shut back down, and said he's even known President Donald Trump to wear a mask "at times."

"Every day we learn more information about this virus," the California Republican said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends."  "It's actually the droplets from individuals to another one, so wearing a mask, social distancing, and not touching your face and washing your hands is a way we can continue the economy opening up."

Trump has made it clear that he doesn't want to wear a mask, but McCarthy pointed out that when the president is speaking, he's socially distanced.

"I've known the president to have worn a mask at times," said McCarthy. "Wearing the mask is the best opportunity for us to keep this economy open, keep us working keep us safe, and help us as we build towards that vaccine where we're in a much stronger position than any other country before."

He added that in his home community, where coronavirus is growing, the virus infections are growing not so much from places like bars being open, but instead by community spread, including from within people's own homes, so social distancing must still continue.

He also dismissed a question about whether it is a "good thing" that younger people, who often do not have a severe reaction to COVID-19, are now the ones who are primarily being diagnosed with the disease.

"Well a good thing would be nobody getting the virus and that China not be lying to the rest of the world," said McCarthy, pointing out a study in which 95% of Americans have said the coronavirus pandemic would not have happened if China hadn't lied.

"Well it is here now, and it's something we didn't invite here," said McCarthy. "We're testing 600,000 people a day. More than 31 million. No other country can do that."
