Andy McCarthy: Rosenstein 'Punted' Talks After Midterms

It was no surprise Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein "punted" rather than meeting with House and Senate representatives last week, as he is likely trying to deny speaking until after the Nov. 6 midterms, National Review columnist and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Andy McCarthy said Monday.

"The idea will be, that if the Democrats take the House – people will say and the Justice Department will say – there is no point having a big hearing during a lame duck session of Congress," McCarthy told Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "And then, the Democrats will be running the place, and there won't be a hearing."

Rosenstein was to have been interviewed last week, but House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., said they were postponing it, announcing in a statement the committees would not be able to ask all questions they wanted in the time that was allotted.

"This is more likely going to be a public hearing . . . I don't think it's likely to happen in the next week before the midterms," McCarthy said. "Hopefully, the sooner the better."

He also dismissed comments Sunday from Rep. John Ratcliffe, R-Texas, who said one of the reasons the interview was delayed was because Rosenstein, who is overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian collusion, did not know there would be questions about that investigation.

"What do you think they wanted to talk to him about, the weather?" McCarthy said. "Of course, he knew it was about the Russia investigation."
