Gov. Bevin: School Violence About More Than Just Guns

By    |   Tuesday, 27 February 2018 10:30 AM

Violence in the nation's schools is more than just a gun issue, as there are many underlying causes, including with the Valentine's Day shootings in Parkland, Florida, Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin said Tuesday.

"To me, again, we have to look at what are the underlying causes," the Republican governor, who joined with other governors meeting with President Donald Trump on Monday, told Fox News' "Fox and Friends.

"This would be like finding a person lying in the street dead. We can identify the fact that that is their current condition. But what led to this? What is the back story? What has created this instance?"

When it comes to school violence, he argued, even with a gun being used, the "cultural reason" behind the shooting also must be considered.

"What are we doing or not doing as a society individually and collective to protect and arm our young people literally and figuratively in this sense, with the skills they need to handle the pressures of being young?" said Bevin.

Bevin said he came away from Monday's meeting with Trump impressed at his willingness to listen.

He said he also agrees with Trump's suggestion that some qualified teachers and school personnel be armed, but only on a voluntary basis and if the teachers go through extensive training "far above and beyond" what is needed to be a concealed carry gun owner.

"They should go through a battery of psychiatric tests to ensure they are mentally able, not just carrying concealed," said Bevin. "It shouldn't just be teachers, it should be available to administrators. Custodians, coaches, anyone inside that school on a voluntary basis, I think we would be foolish not to consider that as a possibility."
