US Marshals, Police Wounded, Suspect Dead in NYC Gunfight

Monday, 28 July 2014 04:59 PM EDT

Two U.S. Marshals and a New York City police detective were shot and wounded on Monday and a man was killed during an attempt to arrest him in the city's Greenwich Village neighborhood on suspicion of sex abuse, the police said.

The wounded law enforcement agents were hospitalized, New York Police Department Commissioner William Bratton said at a news conference.

The officer wounded in the shooting was expected to live, police said, but the extent of the federal marshals' injuries were unknown.

Police did not immediately identify the suspect.

Bellevue Hospital, where the agents were transported, did not immediately return calls from Reuters.

The NYPD and the U.S. Marshals Service were investigating.

"This has all just transpired," Bratton said. "It's a very active crime scene investigation."
