A U.S. Marine was shot and killed Tuesday around 5 a.m. ET at his Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C., the Marine Corps said on its website.

The Marine's name is being withheld until next of kin are notified. Officials said there was no threat to the public and no arrests have been made as the shooting took place on the grounds of the Marine Barracks, the oldest active post in the Marine Corps.

"The command's priorities are to take care of the Marine's family and friends," Col. Don Tomichm commanding officer of Marine Barracks, said in a statement. "We want to ensure these personnel are being provided for during this challenging time."

The serviceman was shot and hospitalized but died later in the day from a gunshot wound.
