Police: 19-year-old in Wisconsin Dies After Shot by Officer

Saturday, 07 Mar 2015 09:42 AM

Madison police say a 19-year-old man died Friday night after being shot by an officer.

Police Chief Mike Koval says the man was shot after an altercation with the officer and died at a hospital. Koval did not know if the man was armed, and authorities have not released the man's name.

Koval said police were called because the man was jumping into traffic, the Wisconsin State Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1BcH5W5 ). He says the officer went to an apartment where the man had gone, then went inside after hearing a disturbance. Koval says the officer fired more than one shot after the 19-year-old assaulted the officer.

The state Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.

A crowd of people gathered at the scene on Friday night to pray and chant, the newspaper reported.

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin called it "a tragedy beyond description." He also said that because of a state-required outside investigation, Madison police won't be able to provide many details about the shooting.

"I expect there will be a lot of anger and frustrations, particularly from friends," Soglin said. "I hope as the pain eases that something constructive will come of this."
