Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., urged President Donald Trump to "look long and hard" at his decision to pull U.S. forces from Syria, saying an ISIS suicide attack against U.S. troops Wednesday is a deadly reminder of the nation's mission there.

Graham, the new Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, pressed the case during the confirmation hearing for Attorney General nominee William Barr, the Washington Examiner reported.

"To those who lost their lives today in Syria, you were defending America, in my view," he said.

"To those in Syria who are trying to work together, you are providing the best and only hope to your country. I hope the president will look long and hard at what we're doing in Syria."

Graham said "everybody wants our troops to come home" but they "have to be safe," the New York Post reported.

Trump announced in December he planned to withdraw the roughly 2,000 troops stationed in Syria and fighting the remnants of ISIS.

The decision played a role in former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis' resignation, and the announcement caught many lawmakers on Capitol Hill off-guard, the Examiner noted.

Graham initially called the decision an "Obama-like" mistake and compared it to the withdrawal of troops from Iraq in 2011 that fostered the rise of ISIS.
