A majority of states in the country have experienced only a slight drop in their unemployment rates, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics year-over-year statistics released Friday.
The list of states with decreasing unemployment, according to the
New York Times, includes several of the most contested battleground states, including Florida, Nevada, and Ohio.
The BLS report said that in September, 41 states and the District of Columbia showed decreases in unemployment, six had increases, and three showed no change from the reported numbers in August.
The national jobless rate dropped by 1.2 points from September 2011 to September 2012, according to the report, in addition to the decrease to 7.8 percent from August to September of this year. That is the first time unemployment has been below 8 percent since January of 2009.
State-by-state, the largest drops in unemployment from September 2011 to September 2012 were in Florida, with a 1.7 percent drop, and Ohio, where it decreased by 1.6 points, the Times reported.
New Hampshire was the only state to report an increase, with its unemployment rate going up by 0.3 to 5.7 percent.
