Ed Klein: We Don't Need Mainstream Media Any More

By    |   Friday, 01 June 2012 08:41 PM EDT

Ed Klein’s blockbuster new book about President Obama is No. 1 on the New York Times’ list of best-sellers for the second straight week, despite being ignored by virtually the entire “mainstream media.”

And veteran journalist Klein tells Newsmax that the success of his book “The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House” proves that “you don’t need the mainstream media anymore” to reach the American public.

Klein’s book is buttressed by nearly 200 interviews with people close to Obama, and features explosive disclosures about one of the most secretive White Houses.

Klein is the former editor-in-chief of the New York Times Magazine, former foreign editor of Newsweek, and a contributing editor to Vanity Fair. He sat down in New York with former Congressman and Newsmax columnist John LeBoutillier for an exclusive interview about Klein’s expose.

Discussing the mainstream media’s disregard for his book, which contains a lengthy interview with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Klein told LeBoutillier: “The Washington Post spent 5,000 words about Mitt Romney cutting off somebody’s hair 46 years ago, and doesn’t write a single word about my on-the-record interview with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who was the president’s pastor three years ago.”

LeBoutillier pointed out that the New York Times did run a “fairly hostile” review of “Amateur,” but the rest of the mainstream media — including “Today” and “Good Morning America” — ignored the book.

“They haven’t called,” Klein said. “None of them has called.

“I even called one of the two Chicago newspapers and said Barack Obama is from Chicago, David Axelrod, his political guru, is from Chicago, the Rev. Wright is from Chicago, and the guy who supposedly offered Rev. Wright a bribe is from Chicago. Are you guys going to do a story on this? And the answer was, we’re thinking about it.

“I feel very proud that while I have been attacked on the Internet by the left wing, nobody named in the book, nobody quoted in the book, not one, has come forward and said, I didn’t say that or it’s not true. There has been no factual challenge to the book.”

LeBoutillier noted that Newsmax, Fox News, The Drudge Report, the New York Post, and radio talk shows featured Klein and the book, and those five drove sales.

“The interesting thing is that you don’t need the mainstream media to get to the American public anymore,” Klein observed.

“The American public is no longer the captive of the New York Times, the Washington Post, the L.A. Times. The public is now listening to Newsmax, to Fox News, and to the conservative websites on the Internet.

“We have finally broken through, and Newsmax has led the way.”
