Judge Nixes Release of Documents in Dugard Case

Monday, 28 February 2011 01:44 PM EST

PLACERVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California judge is refusing to release grand jury transcripts, mental health records and other documents in the Jaycee Dugard kidnapping case.

El Dorado County Superior Court Judge Douglas Phimister ruled Monday that making the information public would jeopardize Phillip Garrido's right to a fair trial.

Garrido and his wife, Nancy, are charged with abducting an 11-year-old Dugard from a South Lake Tahoe bus stop in 1991 and holding her captive for 18 years.

Media organizations, including The Associated Press, had asked the judge to unseal the documents.

Phillip Garrido is expected to enter a plea later in the day.
