Comic Kevin Nealon says his former "Saturday Night Live" co-star Al Franken has been a "great, strong" senator who is now being used as a "sacrificial lamb" by the Democratic Party.

"I've known Al since 1986, since when I first got on 'SNL.' And I think he was definitely an effective senator for Minnesota," Nealon — best known on "SNL" as the anchor of "Weekend Update" and for the characters "Mr. Subliminal" and "Franz" — told The Wrap on Monday.

"A great, strong senator — and he was great in Congress. And he really loved his job and he worked hard for the people of Minnesota."

Last week, Franken, a Democrat, announced he will soon resign from office following several accusations of sexual misconduct, including alleged groping and unwanted kissing.

"What he did was juvenile … Of course it was juvenile. He's a comic at heart. That doesn't make it right, but in no way does it compare to what [Alabama Senate hopeful] Roy Moore and [President] Donald Trump have done [per] some of the allegations," Nealon said in an interview with The Wrap's Tony Maglio.

"Unfortunately, Al became a sacrificial lamb to the Democratic Party and he had to step down… I can't imagine what he's going through now — the pain."
