The Black Lives Matter movement is hurting its own cause by attacking Democrats who are sympathetic and not offering any solutions, Juan Williams, a liberal Fox News pundit, writes at
The Hill.
Williams has long been a defender of the movement, but says its actions of interrupting presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley and secretly recording a private meeting with Hillary Clinton work only to turn off supporters and cause black voters to give up on the Democratic Party.
When the Democratic National Committee gave its support to the movement, Black Lives Matter was critical.
"When they say that all political parties try to 'control or contain' black liberation, they are also damaging faith in the political system, especially among young people," Williams wrote.
Black voters already are more likely to stay home this election since Barack Obama won't be on the ballot, Williams said, and criticism of the political process — including the Democratic Party — is likely to increase lack of voter participation.
Black Lives Matter also
should be reaching out to Republicans such as Sen. Rand Paul, as well as joining forces with Latinos and offering solutions rather than just criticism, Williams said.
"Lobby Congress, hold voter registration drives, quiz candidates on their plan for sentencing reform, but don’t heckle the candidates and incite violence by calling for cop-killing," Williams wrote. "The movement could be critical to securing and mobilizing black support for criminal justice reform that actually would improve black lives."
