A Georgetown University law professor said Thursday the FBI's handling of the Michael Flynn case is perplexing to the point he believes it was a "canned hunt" and Flynn was simply captured and shot.

Responding to a report of a federal judge requesting special counsel Robert Mueller hand over documents that detail the initial questioning of former National Security Adviser Flynn on Jan. 24, 2017, Jonathan Turley characterized the questioning as "highly irregular."

"This thing really gives you pause," Turley told Fox News. "These 302 field reports are supposed to be written contemporaneously. They were written months later.

"You are supposed to notify the White House counsel if you are going to conduct an interview like this. James Comey said [Thursday] that he decided to simply bypass that protocol and have them go directly into Flynn's office."

Comey, the FBI director at the time, dispatched two agents to the White House to speak with Flynn about a conversation he had with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. weeks earlier. Comey said this week the Russia investigation was in its early stages, so he decided to send the agents to speak with Flynn in a low-key manner.

"It is all disturbing how he tosses aside protocol and rules when he feels there's something to get out of it," Turley said.

"They got from [Flynn] that he met with the Russians, which was neither illegal nor unprecedented. He failed to say that they talked about sanctions, but then they intentionally didn't bring that up to him. The agents at the time said apparently they didn't believe he was lying. And then Mueller decided to go back and charge him.

"It became a canned hunt – they put this guy in the cage and they shot him."

In a court filing last week, Mueller recommended Flynn receive no jail time for lying to the FBI because he has cooperated with the Russia probe.
