Cindy and Meghan McCain both expressed disappointment and frustration that President Donald Trump continues mocking and attacking their husband and father, Sen. John McCain, even after he promised he would stop doing so, they said on "The View" on Wednesday.

The senator, whom Trump had derided during the presidential campaign as not a war hero because he had been captured, has a rare form of brain cancer and is battling for his life.

Meghan McCain said that she "had a really nice conversation" with Trump and first lady Melania Trump after a report last year said the president had been "physically mocking" her father in the White House.

"I was under the impression this sort of fight between our families, and between him and my father, especially at this particular moment would end," she said.

But during Trump's speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference last week, the president mocked McCain for derailing the GOP's healthcare bill by imitating his thumb up and thumb down motion, prompting the crowd to boo.

"I understand the argument is, 'he's talking about policy'," Meghan continued. "But it's still incredibly hurtful, especially after I've had this conversation with him on the phone, to have this moment of booing at CPAC. And I feel, quite frankly, very naive to have believed that this would have been any different."

Cindy McCain added that "from my own feeling, we need more compassion. We need more empathy. We need more togetherness in terms of working together. We don't need more bullying and I'm tired of it."

Others on the panel said that it speaks to the low character of Trump, and the show's co-host Whoopi Goldberg, noting Sen. McCain's popularity, said Trump's "ego doesn't allow for others to have accolades."
