Former National Security Adviser John Bolton said Tuesday that "our country's commitment to our national security priorities is under attack from within."

"It probably goes without saying that our country's commitment to our national security priorities is under attack from within," Bolton, whom President Donald Trump fired in September after a rocky 17-month tenure, said on Twitter.

"America is distracted. Our enemies are not.

"We need to make U.S. national security a priority."

He was not more specific.

Bolton, 71, who clashed repeatedly with Trump and other administration officials over many global security issues, tweeted for the first time Friday since leaving the White House.

He had claimed that the administration "refused to return access to my personal Twitter account."

However, Trump denied this had happened, saying that he had a "good relationship" with Bolton.

But Bolton the next day called on the U.S. to "get back to discussing critical national-security issues confronting America," saying the dangers were "grave" and "growing."

Democrats believe Bolton may be a critical witness in the House impeachment hearings against the president, but Bolton has said he would only testify if subpoenaed, which legislators have not yet done.
