The modest South Carolina home where the Rev. Jesse Jackson was born may become a historic site.

The civil-rights leader told The State that grassroots efforts are underway to preserve the 75-year-old, three-bedroom home in Greenville.

"My mother couldn't afford the hospital care so I was born in the house," said Jackson, who described his childhood neighborhood as "very poor."

Jackson, a two-time presidential candidate and winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, told the newspaper the house "can be of value to the community" and where people could come "and see things we've done and places we've been. The sky is the limit."

If the effort is successful, the home, which the real-estate website Zillow estimates is worth about $134,000, will be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
