NJ Loses Court Appeal to Allow Betting on Pro and College Sports

Tuesday, 17 September 2013 11:04 AM EDT

New Jersey lost an appeal to legalize sports gambling in the state after a federal appeals court in Philadelphia upheld a lower court decision barring proposed legislation from taking effect.

The law would permit wagering on professional and college sports at racetracks and Atlantic City casinos.

The NCAA, NFL, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and Major League Baseball, along with the U.S. government, argued that the measure would undermine the integrity of professional sports and violate a 1992 federal law requiring states to restrict sports betting.

New Jersey countered unsuccessfully that the 1992 law is unconstitutional and violated the state’s sovereign rights.
