An eagle-eyed high school sophomore scored an extensive interview with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis — cold-calling him after noticing his private cell phone number in a photo in The Washington Post.

Mercer Island, Wash., teen Teddy Fischer wrote down the phone number in the picture that accompanied a story on presidential body guard Keith Schiller – and promptly called it to ask if Mattis would do an interview for his school's newspaper, The Islander.

Islander editor-in-chief Jane Gormely explained Schiller "could be seen carrying a stack of papers with a yellow sticky note stuck on the top. Written on it, in black ink, was the name Jim 'Mad Dog' Mattis and a phone number."

"A few days later, when Teddy said Mattis had agreed, I didn't believe him," Gormely wrote. "But, after receiving three more calls from the defense secretary to set up a date and time for the interview, Teddy and I got to work preparing questions."

In a full transcript posted by The Islander on June 20, the questions ranged from how to be politically active, prepared adults to foreign affairs and policy.

Fischer also asked Mattis why he decided to call him back.

"I've always tried to help students, because I think we owe it to you young folks to pass on what we learned going down the road so that you can make your own mistakes, not the same ones we made," Mattis replied.
