Democratic lawmakers expressed their shock and dismay at the resignation of Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who will leave his post at the end of February.

Minutes after President Donald Trump announced Mattis' plans, Democrats on Capitol Hill weighed in.

"I am shaken by the resignation of General Mattis. For what it means to our country, for the message it sends to our troops, and for the indication of what his view is of the commander-in-chief," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told reporters.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke alongside Pelosi and had this to say:

"[Thursday's] events have made one thing clear: President Trump is plunging the country into chaos. The stock market's down another 500 points; Gen. Mattis is stepping down, and we know he has real disagreements with the president on Syria and on the wall; and now, President Trump is throwing a temper tantrum and creating the Trump shutdown of the government."

Other Democrats posted their feelings about the matter on Twitter.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.: "I have a lot of respect for General Mattis and after what happened [Wednesday] the resignation is sadly understandable."

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J.: "Secretary Mattis' resignation is a significant loss and shows that that President Trump's foreign policy agenda is spiraling into chaos."

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va."This is scary. Secretary Mattis has been an island of stability amidst the chaos of the Trump administration. As we've seen with the president's haphazard approach to Syria, our national defense is too important to be subjected to the president's erratic whims."

Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I.: "James Mattis was the last adult left in the room. He was maybe the last person who could tell this president 'No.' His departure is a dire omen for the future of our alliances and the security of our country."

Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif."This is an extraordinary letter from Secretary Mattis. We should all be saddened that Mattis is quitting. Unlike a number of @realDonaldTrump Cabinet officials, Mattis actually knows what he is doing and has integrity."

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn.: "Just imagine the morale crisis at the Department of Defense right now, having sustained the 1-2 punch of the Syria reversal and Mattis resignation. Devastating."
