James Lankford: Trump in 'Bad Trap' on Immigrant Separations

(Fox News' "The Daily Briefing")

Sen. James Lankford said Tuesday that the Trump administration was in "a bad trap" on the border-separation issue because "the previous administration said we will ignore the law."

"This is a bad trap the administration is in: Either have the choice of fulfilling the law and actually holding the law or having families separated," the Oklahoma Republican told Dana Perino on Fox News.

"That's a bad choice."

In 2014, Oklahoma GOP Sen. James Inhofe slammed the Obama administration for the large numbers of illegal immigrant children who were captured coming across the border alone in detention centers on military bases in the Sooner State and at other sites.

Lankford was elected to the Senate later that year and currently serves with Inhofe.

"The previous administration said we will ignore the law," he told Perino. "This administration said we are going to abide by the law."

Lankford called for the administration to give families the option of voluntarily returning to their home countries as an intact family, which is not done now.

"If you give the families the opportunity to voluntarily return, then expedite that process and return them as a family so they can stay as a family," he said.

"In the meantime, though, Congress does needs to respond to this."
