Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee which is leading the investigation into the IRS targeting scandal, says it may not be possible to ever get to the truth about the extent of the abuses and how far up in the administration the scandal reached.
In an interview with The Daily Signal, the California Republican said Obama administration officials have done "everything they can to slow down the process" of the investigations, but said safeguarding the American people from political abuses by the agency is a paramount concern both now and for the future.
"No entity has more power to regulate your life or destroy your life than the IRS," Issa said. "Lerner clearly was targeting conservative groups."
He added that he believes Lerner knew of the targeting, and noted that she made numerous trips to the White House. "It looks like she didn't act alone," he said.
His comments come following outrage from lawmakers about the loss of troves of Lerner's emails which some lawmakers believe could have been a deliberate attempt to cover-up evidence of politically motivated targeting.
IRS Commissioner John Koskinen came under fire from the GOP during testimony last month for not revealing sooner that the emails had been lost.
