The United States is  "self-defeating" in its mission to defeat the Islamic State (ISIS), says Michael Rubin, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.

"It really is ironic. You look at the Pentagon press releases, they're talking about five, six and seven airstrikes. Well, our aircraft carriers can launch a plane every 35 or 40 seconds," Rubin said Friday on the "Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"In effect, what you're talking about is President [Barack] Obama getting on television saying we're going to defeat this group and then committing about four solid minutes of aircraft carrier time to get it done.

"Obviously, that's not going to work. Ultimately, if we were serious about an air campaign, we could be making a difference."

Rubin, who is also a senior lecturer at the Naval Postgraduate School's Center for Civil-Military Relations, added:

"We're really being self-defeating.... Most of the airstrikes are occurring far from the front line. Where they're needed is either in Kobani or on the outskirts of Baghdad where ISIS is.

"It's almost as if on Dec. 8, 1941, Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war in Japan and then proceeded to bomb Argentina."
