It is the 10th anniversary of the day the first Apple iPhones went on sale, and they have come a long way since that first 4GB phone with no App store.
Since then, more than 1 billion iPhones have been sold, with more than 50 million sold in the first three months of 2017 alone, CNN reported. The devices have only gotten more expensive; the first iPhone retailed for $499, while today’s models are $649-849. The newest iPhone versions have fingerprint sensors and up to 256 GB of data.
When iPhones first came out in 2007, iPads didn’t yet exist. Those were created in 2008, and the App Store was also added to iOS that year. Developers around the world have made more than $16 billion on apps for Apple devices, and many million-dollar companies have been created and sustained on this technology alone, CNN reported.
Apple stores have become ubiquitous in the last decade, and iPhones have set the standard for user friendliness and durability, while stock prices for Apple have gone up many times over as iPhones have evolved through the years, Fortune reported.
Apple claimed the iPhone became the “gold standard by which all other smartphones are judged,” noting that people use it for video conferencing, making videos, streaming music, social media, email, managing contacts and calendars, listening to podcasts, watching TV and other streaming media, and managing fitness and health.
