$396,000 Raised for Indiana Pizzeria in Gay Weddings Furor

Thursday, 02 April 2015 10:09 PM

A fund set up to help the embattled Indiana pizzeria that will not cater gay weddings has raised a six-figure sum in one day.

More than 13,400 people had donated to Memories Pizza as the fund topped $386,000 by late Thursday through a gofundme.com page set up by an investigative reporter for radio host Dana Loesch.

Lawrence Billy Jones III said he had initiated the fund "to relieve the financial loss endured by the proprietors' stand for faith," according to The Daily Caller

The owners of Memories Pizza in Walkerton shut down the shop on Wednesday night until further notice after an avalanche of threats.

Jones launched the page after the shop closed and urged followers to make liberals "really mad" by raising $50,000 by midnight. Within three hours, donors had sent in $30,000.

He later tweeted: "Pray for a liberal tonight. They're so mad tonight. I wonder why?"

The owners of Memories Pizza declared in a radio interview that they would not cater gay weddings because of their faith.

"If a gay couple came in and wanted us to provide pizzas for their wedding, we would have to say no," said Crystal O'Connor, daughter of owner Kevin O'Connor.

Her comments immediately caused a backlash with critics and customers, many from out of state, who gave the pizzeria negative reviews on Yelp while protesting the family's anti-gay marriage position.

The family-owned restaurant was also bombarded with threatening phone calls and angry comments on Facebook, and feared that they were receiving fake phone orders for pizza.
