Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who has been calling for President Donald Trump's impeachment since her earliest months in office, said after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's announcement of a formal inquiry that the president has already admitted to "impeachable offenses."

Meanwhile, her fellow "squad" Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., said the matter of a call between Trump and the Ukraine president shows he thinks he is above the law.

"I anticipate and I believe there will be a discussion as to whether when we draft or when the judiciary examines the articles," Ocasio-Cortez told reporters after the announcement, reports Fox News. "I think we have to hold the president accountable, and we have to protect our democracy. I believe that we will be doing so."

The articles could include "several different offenses," said Ocasio-Cortez, including seeking foreign assistance and violations of the emoluments clause.

"With that consideration, I defer those to the chairman of the Judiciary Committee," she said.

Meanwhile, Omar told CNN's Wolf Blitzer later in the evening it was important for Pelosi to make sure the investigation would not be about political expediency.

"She wanted to make sure that there was an opportunity for there to be an understanding about what laws were being broken, and I think it is very clear at the moment that a law has been broken and she's ready to move on impeachment as we have been, many of us have been talking about how this president thinks he is above the law, and how we needed to hold him accountable."

Omar said she is "excited" Pelosi is "finally on board," and she thinks the Ukraine phone call and the whistleblower's complaint were what showed Trump thinks he is above the law.

"He was withholding aid so he can pressure a foreign country to dig dirt on a potential presidential opponent," Omar said. "That is very unconstitutional and we must hold him responsible."
