Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, said Tuesday that Democrats talking about impeaching President Donald Trump should be careful of energizing his base.

"Well, I think people are frustrated and it breaks into groups – and we had . . . in some cases, my election is sort of a microcosm of where people are," King told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Tuesday. "My Republican opponent got 35 percent, I think that represents a hardcore Republican Trump base. My Democratic opponent got a little over 10 percent. That's the sort of Progressive Democratic base."

He added a sizable portion of the country backs Trump and feels Democrats have unfairly targeted him, and he should not be impeached.

"But there is a third of the state, just as there is a third of the country, who believes the president is under siege improperly and all those kinds of things – and that's one of the reasons I think we have to wait and see the full scope of what the president is charged with," the senator said.

"To be talking about impeachment now only will inflame that third of the country," King added.

"They'll feel it's a kind of a coup or revenge or something like that. Impeachment is a very high standard in my view. And so people are . . . I think one way to put it is people are waiting for the other shoe to drop."
