A recent ruling by a federal judge will free nearly 2,000 illegal immigrant children into the United States.

The ruling was handed out by U.S. District Court judge Dolly Gee in Los Angeles last week. As a result, according to the Washington Free Beacon, thousands of illegal minors could be set free in the U.S.

Nearly 70,000 illegal minors were taken into custody at the U.S. border with Mexico last year, all without parents. An additional 22,869 children, according to numbers cited by the Beacon, have arrived at the border during the first eight months of this year.

Most have been released, but a total of 1,820 are still detained at three facilities in Texas and Pennsylvania, reports the Beacon. Those remaining in custody could be released by Oct. 23, the date set by Gee's ruling.

The government often tries to release illegal immigrant children to the custody of relatives in the U.S.

Last week's court ruling deals a blow to critics of the Obama administration's immigration policy.

"The president needs to immediately send the National Guard to the southwest border to deal with this crisis," Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, said in a hearing last June, reports the Beacon. "Patrol stations are not set up to handle this massive and growing number of detainees. Let alone children.

"This is a crisis. It's a crisis that's been in the making for years."

A report last summer,
meanwhile, claimed that children are flocking to the border for a variety of reasons besides the promise of being allowed to stay.

A recent Pew Research Center study
showed that the majority of Americans support providing illegals already living in the U.S. a path to citizenship. And 57 percent of those surveyed support keeping the law in place that automatically makes children born to illegal immigrants U.S. citizens if they're born here.
