The new chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee travels to Haiti on Tuesday to survey the stricken country one year after a catastrophic earthquake, the
Miami Herald’s Naked Politics blog reports. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen will also review Haiti’s stalemated presidential election in her first trip as committee chairwoman.

She described Haiti as “near and dear to the U.S.,” which she said has “a vested interest in seeing that stability, democracy and free enterprise take root there.”
The State Department has said it might support a new presidential election in Haiti after 12 of the 19 candidates claimed that fraud marred last November’s vote.
