Rescuers Work through Night to Find Idaho Miner

Sunday, 17 April 2011 07:31 AM EDT

MULLAN, Idaho (AP) — Idaho mining officials say rescuers are working through the night to reach a miner caught in a cave-in more than a mile underground.

Hecla Mining Company released a statement early Sunday saying teams are working 24-hours a day to reach 53-year-old Larry Marek.

The roof of a tunnel at the northern Idaho silver mine collapsed where Marek and his brother were working Friday afternoon. Marek was trapped but his brother escaped unhurt.

There's been no contact with Marek and his condition was unknown.

The company says equipment expected on the scene soon will allow crews tunnel more safely and quickly by remotely controlling a front-end loader.
