Most VA Hospitals in Scandal Manipulated Data

Most of the 93 Veterans Affairs hospitals being investigated in an ongoing scandal intentionally manipulated data, according to a report.

Acting VA inspector general Richard Griffin told the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee Tuesday that his office has concluded that about three-fourths of the facilities knowingly broke rules — "and we're pursuing those," he said, Defense One reports.

Allegations of falsified waiting times and misconduct at the VA hospital in Phoenix surfaced in April, and the VA's Office of Inspector General quickly found other facilities that were doing the same things.

As many as 40 veterans are reported to have died while waiting to see a doctor.

"Frankly, when something is going on for as many years — not everywhere — but at a number of the facilities, it almost becomes the accepted way of doing scheduling," Griffin told the committee.

The "culture that has developed at VA and the lack of management and accountability is simply reprehensible," North Carolina Republican Sen. Richard Burr said during the committee hearing.

On Monday, VA Secretary Bob McDonald — who took control of the department last month — said the VA has "tens of thousands" of open positions but that he is worried about finding candidates to fill the roles.

"We have the [congressional] authorization for positions, the issue now is we have to find the people," McDonald said.

McDonald also announced a 90-day plan that he says will get the troubled hospital system back on track and operating as it should.

Many of the VA hospitals had two waiting lists — a fake one, which they used for reporting purposes, and the real one, which had veterans waiting for months to see a doctor.

McDonald's 90-day plan, along with a congressional bill passed in July, are the first steps to what the department hopes is a renewed sense of trust veterans put in it.
