The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) may soon allow people to stay in homeless shelters based on the gender they identify with — a proposal that has religious organizations up in arms.
The Hill reports that HUD is expected to finalize the new regulations which have been applauded by LGBT groups next month. They would affect many shelters run by religious groups which oppose them as liberal Washington policy run amok.
"Why do you have to force other people to feel really uncomfortable, and in some cases unsafe, just to make your political point?" Tim Wildmon, president of the American Family Association, told The Hill. "What if I self-identify as a woman today, and tomorrow I want to self-identify as a man?"
But David Stacy, government affairs director at the Human Rights Campaign, countered to The Hill: "Transgender women are women regardless of whether they were born male."
