Hollywood celebrities eager to influence President Barack Obama’s agenda at the G-8 this week in Northern Ireland have issued a video demanding a nuclear-free zone worldwide.
The A-list appearances on the two-minute video include Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon, Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Whoopi Goldberg, who say they are speaking on behalf of national-security experts and the world.
“Some argue that the spread of these weapons cannot be stopped, cannot be checked,” De Niro said.
Damon responds: “Such fatalism is a deadly adversary.”
A group called Global Zero, which is leading an international campaign to eliminate all nuclear weapons by 2030, produced the video.
“The message from national-security experts and citizens around the world is clear: The only way to eliminate the global nuclear danger is to eliminate all nuclear weapons,” Douglas said. “It's time to set the world's course to zero.”
Global Zero wants Obama to lead negotiations for additional cuts in nuclear stockpiles created during the Cold War, and to urge other countries with nuclear power to enter into new agreements to eliminate the weapons.
Obama will meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin during the two-day G-8 conference. While the agenda includes nuclear weapons, Syria is expected to be a central topic of discussion, as well as the situations in North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan, climate change, and revelations that the U.S. was spying on millions of international phone calls.
