The secretary of the Air Force said Wednesday she supports submitting a proposal for President Donald Trump's Space Force idea.
Heather Wilson was asked about the Space Force during the Defense News Conference and indicated the military has an obligation to follow through with at least a formal proposal.
"We expect to put forward a proposal with the president's budget for FY20 that includes a Space Force Department, as the president has outlined," Wilson said.
"And if we're gonna do this, we should do it right. … Let's have this debate, support the president's proposal, and put it forward — and make sure that we don't do this with half measures. I think that's probably the most important part for me."
Wilson said she would like the proposal to include a clause that would give the Space Force "a full array of authorities and responsibilities, just as I have in the Air Force, and that would include the full authority for acquisition."
She added that Trump's idea is "very forward-looking."
Trump first mentioned the idea of forming a Space Force in March during a speech to Marines in San Diego.
