CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — The privileged mingle with those on the fringes of society at what's believed to be the only entirely student-run homeless shelter in the country.
The Harvard students who volunteer at the 24-bed Harvard Square Homeless Shelter say demand has been greater than ever this winter because of the harsh weather and continued economic woes.
They are trying to change the lives of the guests but often find their own lives are changed. Many of them have been inspired to a life of service.
U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan is a former volunteer.
Current co-administrator Luci Yang says volunteering at the shelter has been her most enriching experience at Harvard.
