The press secretary for Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Tom Marino was arrested on Friday after he allegedly attempted to bring a 9mm handgun into a congressional building in Washington,
Politico reported.
Ryan Shucard was charged by the U.S. Capitol Police with the felony charge of carrying a pistol into the Cannon House Office Building without a license, the political news website said.
The handgun, which was not loaded, was allegedly discovered when he tried to enter the building. Capitol Hill staffers must pass through a metal detector and have their bags screened before entering congressional buildings.
William Tighe, the chief of staff for Marino, told Politico that Shucard was placed on unpaid leave while an investigation was conducted, and that his office is cooperating with police inquiries. Marino was elected in 2010.
Shucard, of Littleton, Colorado, joined Marino in May 2014 after serving for nearly 18 months as a staff assistant for Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.
