Norquist Raises Brows With Plan to Attend 'Burning Man' Fest

By    |   Monday, 28 July 2014 08:16 PM EDT

Tax-reform conservative Grover Norquist lit up Twitter on Monday, declaring his plan to "scratch one from the bucket list" and attend the annual counter-culture free-for-all "Burning Man":

He's not the first unlikely attendee to make an appearance at the annual Nevada desert festival: George Clooney's ex-girlfriend Stacy Keibler and Mark Zuckerberg have traveled there, as well as Sean "Diddy" Combs, the Huffington Post reported last year.

The Peninsula Press reports the festival's attendees span the spectrum, citing a multiyear "census" that found about half are college graduates and the most popular careers are in the computer and technology industries.

Norquist, 57, who founded Americans for Tax Reform in 1985 "at President [Ronald] Reagan's request," according to the group's website, has tweeted his interest previously, tweeting in 2012:

His plan drew mixed reactions.

"[I]t makes a certain kind of sense that the founder of Americans for Tax Reform would make a pilgrimage out to the desert," Slate wrote. "He's a libertarian anti-tax crusader. Burning Man is a libertarian utopia. Why wouldn't he want to see some of his ideals in action?"

Vanity Fair mocked, "Our condolences for longtime attendees, who may have to get dusty (and dusted) elsewhere."
