At least six county Republican parties in Texas have voted to censure Gov. Greg Abbott, claiming he’s gone too far in his coronavirus response.

Two of the biggest Republican counties in the state, Montgomery and Denton, approved censure resolutions on Thursday night, The Texas Tribune reported. The news outlet noted censure resolutions are formal condemnations of an official’s statements or behavior.

The county Republicans in Texas are accusing Abbott of violating core principles of the GOP, including free enterprise and separation of powers. Censure resolutions have also been approved by Republicans in Hood, Ector, Harrison and Llano counties.

The resolutions came after the governor ordered bars to shut down and directed residents in most counties to wear masks while in public, according to the Tribune.

The resolutions ask that the delegates to the state Republican convention consider censuring Abbott when they meet next week.

Meanwhile, sheriffs in nine Texas counties are refusing to enforce Abbott’s order mandating that residents wear masks. The law enforcement officials say they will not issue citations to those who do not comply.
