A Republican Senate candidate has released a startling television ad in which she sits at her kitchen table with a handgun resting next to her and tells of being threatened with death for her conservative views.
"Ever have someone threaten your life for something you believe in? I have," Leah Vukmir, a Wisconsin state senator, says as she looks directly into the camera.
"When Scott Walker and I beat the union bosses, cut billions in taxes and defunded Planned Parenthood, the left couldn't take it. With President Trump, we can do the same in Washington. Standing on principle takes guts, I know what it takes."
The 30-second ad for Vukmir – who is facing management consultant Kevin Nicholson in the GOP primary on Aug. 14 – begins with an eerie recreation of a voicemail she received as the camera pans pictures of her family.
"I know where you live and I'm going to come for you. You're going to die and I'm going to be the one who does it," says the unidentified caller in the re-creation.
When the camera comes to rest on Vukmir, the firearm, contained in a black holster, lays on the table on her right side. She doesn’t say anything about the weapon during her pitch.
Vukmir, who has been endorsed by the Wisconsin GOP, or Nicholson will face Democratic incumbent Sen. Tammy Baldwin in November. Baldwin served in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1993 to 1999 and in the U.S. House from 1999 to 2013, at which point she began serving in the Senate.
