GOP Uses Bush 'Get Well' E-Card to Raise Money

By    |   Friday, 09 August 2013 11:23 AM EDT

Hours after George W. Bush emerged from successful heart surgery in Dallas, the National Republican Congressional Committee used a "Get Well Soon" e-card to the former president to raise money.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the NRCC emailed supporters an e-card to sign that linked to a fundraising page for the organization.

"President George W. Bush courageously defended our freedom and our country, and America misses his days in office now more than ever before," the NRCC wrote, encouraging people to sign the card.

After signing, supporters were encouraged to "Chip in $5 to help us send President Bush a bouquet of bluebonnets — the Texas state flower." Donation options reportedly went as high as $250.

The e-card also was posted to the NRCC website for the public to sign, but there was no pitch for funds on the site, according to ABC News.

Pressed for comment by ABC, NRCC spokesman Daniel Scarpinato wrote in a statement, "This is a wonderful opportunity for Americans to show President Bush how much they care about him as he recovers."

"The reaction has been overwhelming, and we all look forward to his speedy recovery," he said.

Bush was admitted to the hospital on Monday after the blockage was discovered during a routine physical. Tuesday's operation to insert a stent into the artery appears to have gone well. The 43rd president was discharged and returned home on Wednesday.
