Racial Slurs ID White House on Google Maps While Fix Sought

By    |   Wednesday, 20 May 2015 01:48 PM

A racial slur associated with the White House and President Barack Obama on Google Maps is putting the company in scramble mode to fix the problem.

First reported by The Washington Post on Tuesday evening, the issue involves searching for a derogatory term used to describe African-Americans, followed by the word "king." The result show a zoomed-in map image of the White House and the area surrounding it.

"Some inappropriate results are surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologize for any offense this may have caused," a Google spokesperson told the Post. "Our teams are working to fix this issue quickly."

Newsmax searched for the term at midday Wednesday and found the problem still existed.

A Talking Points Memo report, meanwhile, said other searches using derogatory terms — some extreme — were also pointing to the White House.

The problem may lie in the fact that users are able to mark locations in the Google Maps program. The situation with the White House is not the only time something inappropriate has been done on the app.

Last month, it was revealed that someone marked a fictitious store called "Edwards Snow Den" at the White House, a reference to former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. Snowden is now living in Russia after he leaked secret documents related to U.S. spying practices.

On May 12, Google announced it was disabling user editing on Map Maker while it works through the issues.

"We are temporarily disabling editing on Map Maker starting today, while we continue to work towards making the moderation system more robust," said Pavithra Kanakarajan,  product manager of Google Map Maker.

"We thank each one of you who responded to us with your support and thoughtful suggestions on how to resolve this situation. We are considering all options that will help us turn on editing as soon as possible, and we will keep you posted on the progress we make."

Kanakarajan promised to have an update by May 27.
